Raise The Balloon! NO SIXTY FEET!!!!
What's wrong with San Diego's plan to extend the trolley north, along Interstate 5?
San Diego's red trolleys are colorful and popular with a small number of commuters. I like the idea of having a trolley station close to my house … that sounds like as an environmentally responsible nice idea. But "nice ideas" can totally disrupt and destroy a community when they are poorly planned and executed in a way that rewards greed and special interests.
After decades of working behind-the-scenes, with very little "real" community participation, our city and county planners are attempting to ramrod their trolley project before the end of this decade. Development and construction interests pushed for 60' high rezoning, and stand to reap huge benefits from the juggernaut!
But wait … the dastardly plan has been exposed! My neighbors have joined together, today we took action. Hundreds of us marched in protest of 60-foot redevelopment in the zones around the new trolley route. Although I am sure that all of us would welcome modernization of tired 60-year-old buildings, none of us wants to live in a jungle of 6-story stucco boxes. Marchers guided a weather balloon along the route to illustrate what could happen.
Here's some video that I took along the parade route. The red ballon marks sixty feet … most everything else is less than half that tall!
The politicians call it "Densification"
The developers call us "NIMBY's"
…but we're just trying to save San Diego from itself!

It's CHRISTMAS AT COSTCO: September 12, 2014
It's already CHRISTMAS at Costco!
(At least Costco waited a week past Labor Day.)
Don't get me wrong, I love Costco! They know how to delight their customers, with great pricing, warranties, and $1.50 hot dogs. And they actually hire full-time employees, pay them a living wage, and provide access to a benefit package.
But hey, we haven't even reached the end of summer, yet their merchandising geniuses have moved the Halloween stuff to make room for Christmas. It's a very odd feeling to walk through the warehouse and hear electronic Christmas songs!

August 12: Time for Costco to start selling Halloween Stuff!
If you're like most people, you hate the summer. When the weather gets nice, we start dreaming of sleet and freezing rain!
Guess what? We're in luck! ... Costco displayed it's Halloween merchandise yesterday. I'm gonna' get a couple of those scary-looking skeletons and pick out my costume!

A rainbow across Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls (2002)
I've been digitally archiving my photo albums. Here's a nice picture from the Zambian side of Victoria Falls.

Farto Drug Store
Where do Brazilians go when they have intestinal gas??
Don't go inside ... we've heard that it stinks! |
We drove past this pharmacy when we were in Rio (2002). Probably a great place to buy Beano!

Painted Lines on the Freeway ... what does this mean?
What are all of these lines supposed to mean?
I noticed these lane markings on the side of the High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane on Interstate 5. Does anyone recognize this odd combination of a solid white PLUS double-solid-yellow? What does it mean ... if I cross it for any reason will I have to pay a $2,000 fine?

I went to the California DMV website. There is no way to ask a question via the Internet. Their website links to the drivers' handbook, but that scholarly work does not answer this question.

Tennis at Indian Wells
We had a nice four-day weekend in the California desert, highlighted by watching tennis pro's battle for the BNP Paribas Open Title.

Tennis in a Baseball Stadium?
What? They're playing tennis in Petco Park?
Yesterday I was inspired after reading an article in MacWorld Magazine about iMovie's new "Trailer" feature.
Last weekend we went to see Davis Cup tennis (USA versus Great Britain). This 87-second masterpiece was pieced together from a few photos and video clips.

Davis Cup Tennis in San Diego
Tennis: United States vs. Great Britain
San Diego converted the outfield of its baseball stadium to his last weekend's Davis Cup tennis matches. We were there for two of the three days.
Unfortunately the home team was not victorious. Perhaps this fan bears some of the responsibility?
